My World

The squid and the whale

Saturday, May 06, 2006

I really liked this movie, it had that distinctive, dysfunctional Wes Anderson quality to it, but what stuck with me throughout is the relationship between the older son and the father and the fact the son has so much respect for him and wants to be like him even though the guy is an asshole and how little by little he sees these smalls cues that finally evoke some sense. Maybe it reminded me of times when you think you really want something, you are totally blinded by the object of your desire that you never put into context, you just fight for it. But when you spend some time peeling away the illusions, you realise all is never what it seems at first and you don't want it anymore. How much is that about the object of your desire and how much is that about you?
I liked the film.
