For a while I have not seen film like this one. What a gem. To have a whole lot of melodramatic crap, a lecturer that drinks due to the loss of his beautiful wife, a deaf son, a meaningful mathematical code, solar issue (did I say he is a space lecturer) that threatens to wipe everyone, religious reference, meaningful black stones, aliens that look like Danes and pretty hot chick with equally hot daughter. I guess now one cannot make a Hollywood film without making a character loveable (good father, good job) and yet disfunctional (drinks, refuses to speak to his father who is a priest due to the fact that he rejected him for being a scientist...), the child battles adversity (has a hearing aid). They happen to live in a wonderful huge house (on a lecturer's salary...in what universe is that?) etc etc... Melodrama takes most of the movie and is rather draining. The aliens save the children in order to make them repopulate Earth. Lecturer dies in the arms of his priest father and we all cry...yeah right! My version: Kid is not deaf, he did not lose his wife, they struggle to survive on his salary, she always dreamt of marrying a banker (perhaps not right now...but you get the drift) ... the kid finds the code, lecturer scrambles it, tries to decode it, manages and everyone dies, no aliens, no stones, no survival, no wonderful planets with fields of gold and bunnies. That is basically what it would be like should something like that happen, why ruin it with all sorts of crap. Only go and see this if you have nothing better to do with your time, it is worth it for the scenes of quiet and autumny residential town....
